'Behind the Blue': Acting Dean of College of Public Health Heather Bush

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 4, 2023) — Established in 2004, the University of Kentucky College of Public Health strives to develop transformative solutions to health challenges through teaching, research and service efforts. With Kentucky at the epicenter of some of the country’s major public health challenges, the College of Public Health is dedicated to transforming and assisting in the creation of a healthier community, state and world for everyone.

Heather M. Bush, Ph.D., is the acting dean of the College of Public Health, and former chair of the Department of Biostatistics. Bush focuses her scholarly work on vulnerable populations, examining issues of women’s health, the impacts of sexual violence on health and the prevention of sexual violence. As an investigator, she works to promote the engagement of populations typically underrepresented in research.

On this episode of "Behind the Blue," Bush talks about her journey from statistics to public health, the variety of disciplines in the college and how their work impacts our daily lives, and what the college has planned for the 2023 National Public Health Week, which is happening now through April 9. As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
