Crystal Miller, DrPH, alumna of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health (CPH), has been appointed Commissioner of Health for Lexington-Fayette County. Dr. Miller brings nearly two decades of service, previously serving as Director of the WEDCO District Health Department, which covers Kentucky’s Harrison, Nicholas, and Scott counties.
In her new position, Dr. Miller is focused on strengthening internal collaboration, championing existing health initiatives, and building community partnerships to broaden the health department’s impact.
“I want to also expand the footprint from research to practice through student internships and opportunities,” she said.
Dr. Miller earned her master’s and doctorate in public health from CPH while also working as a research assistant at the College. Reflecting on her public health journey, Dr. Miller credits the College with laying the groundwork for her career.
“CPH and the experience I had during my time there gave me the foundational understanding of public health, why it is valuable work, and connections that helped me be successful during my tenure at WEDCO for the past 18 years,” she said. “Had it not been for CPH, I would never have been in my role at WEDCO and would not be incoming Commissioner at Lex-Fayette.”
Dr. Miller also returns to the College in a new capacity: as a member of the CPH Board of Advisors.
“CPH is a critical component to graduating competent students into our public health workforce,” she said. “In order to impact public health locally in communities, we need students who understand the foundation of public health. I hope to bring the practice component and the lens of local health departments to the advisory board.”
