Students applying to the BPH program must complete the 18 hours listed below and must:

  • Earn a grade of B or higher in CPH 201

  • Earn a grade of C or higher in all other pre-major course requirements

  • Have a minimum of a 3.0 grade-point average on pre-major course requirements

  • Have a minimum of a 2.75 cumulative grade-point average on all college work attempted as computed by the Registrar's Office

Pre-Major Courses - Credit Hours

  • BIO 103 (or higher): Basic Ideas of Biology - 3

  • BST 230: Statistical Literacy in Public Health - 3

  • CLA 131: Medical Terminology from Greek and Latin - 3

  • CPH 201: Introduction to Public Health (must earn a B or higher) - 3

  • GRN 250: Aging in Today’s World - 3

  • MA 111 (or higher): Introduction to Contemporary Math - 3

Subtotal - 18

High School Seniors

Apply to UK for admission. Students admitted as freshmen will be admitted as pre-majors in the College of Public Health. Full admission is typically granted the sophomore year after meeting the selective admission criteria.

  • A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75

  • A grade point average of at least 3.0 in the pre-major courses (see below for the pre-major requirements)

  • A grade of B or better in CPH 201

Current UK Students

Public Health is a selective college with pre-major (PBPH) and upper division (BPH) students. Pre-major applications are accepted throughout the year. Upper Division (BPH) applications are only accepted during the spring term for admission beginning in the fall.

Apply to Upper Division

Apply to upper division between February 1 and June 1. You are encouraged to submit an application even if all pre-major courses have not been completed. A student will be granted admission to the Pre-BPH Program based on the following criteria:

  • A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75

  • A grade point average of at least 3.0 in the currently completed College of Public Health Pre-Major courses

Change Major to Public Health (BPH)

Submit a major-change form in MyUK. Between February 1st and June 1st each year, students will be granted admission for the BPH program based on the following criteria:

  • A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75

  • A grade point average of at least 3.0 in the pre-major courses (pre-major courses must be complete prior to the beginning of the fall term)

  • A grade of B or better in CPH 201

Transfer Students

Apply to UK for admission. Transfer students will be admitted based on the selective admission criteria completed at the time of application.

If the pre-major courses have not been completed at the time of application to UK, a student will be admitted as pre-major (PBPH) so long as the required GPAs (3.0 on completed pre-major course requirements and 2.75 cumulative grade-point average on all college work attempted) have been met.
