For the third year in a row, the University of Kentucky Student Public Health Association (UKSPHA) has been awarded the Student Engagement Award for Excellence by the Kentucky Public Health Association (KPHA). The award recognizes a chapter’s strength in viability, infrastructure, on-campus and off-campus outreach, partnerships, and scholarly pursuits.
"We are incredibly proud of this public health student group for their dedication, passion for service, and impactful work," said Nicole Barber, co-advisor of SPHA. "Their unity and commitment to improving community well-being have earned them this well-deserved recognition. It’s been a joy to watch their inspiring journey, both as a group and individually."
UKSPHA President Samantha Jones credits the organization's success to its strong sense of community and commitment to student growth.
"UKSPHA thrives because it provides a welcoming and supportive environment for students passionate about public health,” Jones said. “We focus on creating meaningful opportunities for professional growth, community impact, and leadership development, while also fostering a strong sense of connection among members. Our consistent dedication to public health advocacy and service has made us a standout organization."
The organization offers a variety of opportunities to engage students in public health beyond the classroom. Through networking with faculty and professionals, participating in volunteer initiatives, and attending social events, members gain valuable insight into the field while building relationships with mentors and public health organizations.
One of UKSPHA’s most impactful initiatives this past year was a goodie bag-making event for Sisters Road to Freedom, a Lexington nonprofit that provides assistance to families through food/clothing banks and empowerment/summer programs.
"We assembled over 40 food bags for local families in the Fayette County area while also including public health informational cards to promote health education," Jones said. "This event was a great example of how we combine direct service with public health advocacy to support the well-being of our community."
UKSPHA also facilitates hands-on learning experiences by collaborating with local health departments and community organizations. Members have volunteered at the flu clinic at Fayette Mall, supported literacy events at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, and engaged in various outreach efforts addressing health disparities in the Lexington area.
Beyond service, the organization plays a vital role in professional development. Through guest speaker events, career panels, and networking opportunities, students connect with public health professionals and organizations. Leadership roles within UKSPHA also help members cultivate essential skills in teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, preparing them for successful careers in public health.
"Networking is a key component of public health, and UKSPHA provides plenty of chances to connect with professionals, faculty, and peers who share your passion," Jones emphasized. "Getting involved early and consistently will not only enhance your understanding of public health but also open doors to internships, mentorship, and career opportunities."
Students interested in joining UKSPHA can stay informed about meetings and events through their BBNvolved page, Instagram (@UKSPHA), GroupMe, or by reaching out via email at kentuckyspha@gmail.com. Any student at the University of the Kentucky who is interested in public health issues can join regardless of their year in school or specific college they attend.
