Dr. Obonyo has worked as the Prevention Coordinator at the Kentucky Department for Public Health Viral Hepatitis Program since early 2020. Prior to that she spent five years working in HIV care as part of a Ryan White program. She is also a part-time instructor for the College of Public Health where she teaches global health to undergraduates.
Dr. Obonyo has spent more than 15 years in public health, healthcare, and social services positions working with immigrants, refugees, LGBTQ persons, those with low socioeconomic status, housing instability, limited English proficiency, and others experiencing numerous barriers to care and services.
She has a bachelor’s degree in Spanish with a minor in sociology from Berea College and a Masters of Public Health in Health Behavior, and a Doctor of Public Health degree in Health Management and Policy, both from the University of Kentucky.
She is a first-generation college graduate from a tiny, rural town in North Texas who fell in love with Kentucky after moving here for college in 2003.
