Dr. April Young, Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the UK College of Public Health, has been recently collaborating on the Vaccine Hesitancy on the Appalachian and Welsh Coalfields research project, funded by the British Academy.
Looking at COVID, in the US and UK respectively, the study focuses on the Welsh and Appalachian coalfields given the commonalities in their legacy of mining, economic transition, and COVID-19's severe impact.
All researchers, practitioners, and the community are invited to an interactive "Coal and Coalfield Webinar" on Wednesday, February 23rd, 9:00am - 12:00pm EST, in which the research team will present the results of surveys conducted with over 9000 residents of the two regions, Appalachian and Welsh, and from in-depth interviews.
Following the presentation, the team will facilitate a discussion among attendees from Wales and Appalachia about how the pandemic has affected the coalfields, and how regions can be resilient in addressing this and future public health challenges.
There will also be an opportunity for networking with fellow policymakers, practitioners, and researchers where attendees can make contacts with people working in their ‘sister’ coalfield region.
