The departments of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the UK College of Public Health welcome Dr. Josh Lambert, Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati, to the next EPI/BST seminar series on Thursday, March 3rd from 12pm to 1pm.
Dr. Lambert is speaking on the topic, "Using big data to identify FDA approved drugs which protect against hospitalization due to COVID-19."
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global public health emergency. There is an urgent need for efficacious therapeutics against the disease. One potential strategy is to repurpose already existing FDA approved drugs to treat the disease.
Using a large health insurance claims database (5 million unique US adults) from 2020, we assess the degree of prophylactic protection the top 1000 most common FDA approved drugs confers against hospitalization due to COVID-19 while simultaneously adjusting for known risk factors and confounders.
In this presentation, an overview of the common pitfalls of using claims data for academic research, and methods to evade them are presented. Finally, drugs which show potentially protective effects are discussed.
