For his exceptional dedication to student success and his role in fostering a collaborative environment within the University of Kentucky College of Public Health (CPH), Benji Bryant was recently honored with the (Becki Flanagan) Spirit of CPH award.
The Spirit of CPH award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond in their roles, making significant contributions to the college community.
His nominator shared, “He is a true collaborator. He is the first to pitch in, roll up his sleeves and figure out a way to solve problems. He goes above and beyond for our students, but is also just a kind human to all. His service to others does not go unnoticed.”
Benji said he was honored to receive the award.
“I was very touched, and I am very glad no words of acceptance were needed because I could not have expressed that properly,” he said. “I have the privilege of working with some of the best people on campus daily in our department. We all make great effort and sacrifice to put our CPH students first, and I would like this award to not be about myself but about our student affairs team.”
Benji joined CPH in August 2019 as the recruitment officer for both undergraduate and graduate programs. He spent his first six months learning the position in person, but the COVID-19 pandemic soon forced everyone to work remotely. During this period, Benji was introduced to advising current students, a responsibility he quickly grew to love.
“I absolutely loved it,” Benji shared. “I want to thank [my supervisor] Britt Allen for allowing me to do that and eventually providing me the opportunity to grow into the role of Graduate Coordinator to continue working with our graduate students. I love helping our students succeed!”
Identifying students in need and ensuring they receive the necessary resources is a fundamental aspect of Benji’s approach. He and his department focus on building trust with all students and offering them the help they may require.
“With both recruiting and advising, our goal is to present students with all of the information needed to make an informed decision that is best for them,” Benji said.
By being transparent and honest about the administrative aspects of advising, Benji helps create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable discussing personal matters. This approach encourages students to come to Benji and the team when they need assistance or support, fostering a sense of trust and security within the department.
“If students feel comfortable with our department, they are more likely to reach out in times of need or distress,” he emphasized.
Benji’s motivation to go above and beyond stems from the collective commitment of his colleagues.
“Our department has a ‘student first’ mentality, and I am happy to reflect that. Every day I see the people around me putting students before anything else, and that makes me proud of this team and this department,” he stated.
Benji said the student affairs team has continued to increase cohort and retention numbers, while incorporating new trends with student engagement.
This success is attributed to the strong teamwork and communication within the group. By working closely together and supporting one another, both collectively and individually, the team has continuously improved and strengthened their collaborative efforts.
“We want the CPH community, including students, staff, and faculty, to continue growing and be the best on campus,” he added.
For those wanting to create a collaborative environment, Benji offers valuable advice: “As with parenting, it takes a village to achieve a high level of potential. This is true for any group or individual. Working together for a common goal, communication, and sometimes stepping aside at times for others to lead can do wonders.”
