Effective July 1st, 2023, Angela Carman, DrPH, Associate Professor in the Health, Behavior & Society department at the University of Kentucky (UK) College of Public Health (CPH), is appointed as the endowed chair in Rural Health Policy. Sponsored by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky (FHKY), their vision is creating a Kentucky where every individual and community reach their highest levels of health.

"I've had the opportunity to work with FHKY as a community advisory council member for several years and I am honored to begin a new chapter working even closer to meet health improvement goals in Kentucky,” said Dr. Carman.

FHKY's endowed chair positions were established in 2001, at the organization’s inception. The chair in rural health policy is located at UK, while the urban health policy chair is located at the University of Louisville.

"FHKY’s mission coordinates so well with the community health assessments, coalition building, and implementation of policy and health improvement interventions that I've been involved in across Kentucky,” said Dr. Carman. “Along with the foundation, I share a devotion to our state and a strong desire to see the health of Kentuckians strengthened and improved."

Among other duties, the endowed chairs work with FHKY to coordinate and share research relevant to the organization’s mission, which is to address the unmet health needs of Kentuckians by developing and influencing policy, improving access to care, reducing health risks and disparities, and promoting health equity.

“We are so pleased to see Dr. Carman as our next endowed chair at the University of Kentucky,” said Ben Chandler, president and CEO, Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. “Her experience and expertise will be a great asset as we continue our efforts to improve the health and well-being of all Kentuckians. And her passion for achieving this goal is a true benefit to our state.”

Dr. Carman’s research interests focus on the practice of public health and include evidence-based intervention implementation, community engagement, public health accreditation readiness and quality improvement. She has received funding from National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and Robert Wood Johnson for this work.

Since joining the CPH faculty in 2012, Dr. Carman has actively worked with local health departments, hospitals, and other community partners to complete community health assessments, community health improvement plans, strategic plans, and to address team development and management issues.

Before pursuing her Doctorate in Public Health at UK, Dr. Carman was the CEO of Berea Hospital, in Berea, Ky. Dr. Carman received her undergraduate degree in business administration from Berea College and an MBA from Eastern Kentucky University.
