Dr. Mary E. Lacy is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology with expertise in diabetes epidemiology.
Her research focuses on improving diabetes care and reducing disparities in diabetes outcomes, examining them through many lenses including racial/ethnic, age-related, and access to care.
Dr. Lacy was recently a KL2 Career Development Award to develop a diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) prediction tool to identify patients at high-risk for DKA-related hospitalizations by leveraging data from the Kentucky Statewide Inpatient Database and electronic health record (EHR) data from two healthcare systems. The primary training goals of the KL2 are to obtain formal and hands-on training in implementation science and clinical informatics. These methods will form part of the next step of the project which aims to improve integration of evidence into clinical practice using health information technology.
Dr. Lacy is also collaborating on several other studies including examining glycemic and vascular risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia in older adults with type 2 diabetes; assessing disparities in guideline-compliant care for Medicaid patients with diabetes; and examining barriers to clinical care and reasons for medication non-adherence in diabetes patients in Appalachia.
