The University of Kentucky's College of Public Health welcomes Dr. Derek Smith, Assistant Professor of Biostatistics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, to the Epidemiology/Biostatistics (EPB) lecture series. Dr. Smith's lecture is titled "The Bootstrap: What to do when you are just not sure".

The bootstrap, along with other resampling methods, are powerful tools in the analysis of biomedical research data and data science applications. The bootstrap is particularly useful in complex data analyses where it is difficult or impossible to complete the analysis using classical statistical models alone, or when there is uncertainty about whether or not a particular experiment is likely to satisfy the assumptions of a given statistical model.

In this lecture, we will review basic bootstrap principles, introduce the utility provided by performing a double bootstrap, and examine some examples of biomedical data where the double bootstrap can be used to gain insight on the performance of statistical analyses and in some cases improve them. This talk is designed to be accessible to researchers with a wide variety of backgrounds and experience with resampling analysis.
