All CPH faculty, staff, and graduate students are invited to attend the "Teaching Techniques Workshop: Backward Design and Student Learning Outcomes" virtual workshop on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 from 9:30-10:30 am, sponsored by the Department of Biostatistics (BS). The workshop presenter is Jennifer Daddysman, lecturer in the BST department.
When designing or evaluating a course or unit of instruction, we often work from the ground up, deciding what topics to cover and the most efficient way to cover them, then deciding what students should know at the end of the course.
However, it can be useful to start with the end in mind: What do we want students to learn? Knowing the end goals – called student learning outcomes – can assist us in selecting what we teach and how we assess students. This process is called backward design.
This workshop will provide an overview of the backward design model, which can be applied to a new course, used to revise an existing course, or used to create or revise an existing unit within a course. We will also consider best practices for writing student learning outcomes and student learning objectives, which guide the backward design process and inform both students and instructors of course and learning goals.
