Per CELT:

A syllabus provides students with information on course requirements and policies, ways to contact you, your expectations for performance, and a schedule of topics. It can also include items such as your teaching philosophy and advice to students on note-taking, critical reading, study habits, and other ways to succeed in your course and others. According to the UK Office of Academic Ombud Services, a syllabus is a contract between the instructor and the student. It should contain information that is clear, explicit, and complete. It must be provided (by paper or electronic) free of charge to students during the first- or second-class meeting of the semester. https://www.uky.edu/celt/creating-uk-syllabus.

Syllabi Template

Close to the start of the semester, the Academic Affairs Administrator will contact you with a template for all courses you teach. The template will include all of the information required by the University Senate. The syllabus will also include information that cannot be edited such as course number, title, course description and competencies.

University Calendar

All dates in the syllabus must align with the University Calendar https://registrar.uky.edu/academic-calendars/university. The calendar specifics the start and end of each semester as well as academic holidays.

Final Exam Scheduling

Final exam week is determined by the Office of the Registrar. There are policies on Final Exam Scheduling including:

  • No final examination shall be given before Monday of the designated final exam week.

  • The examination period for all college credit classes is two hours.

  • All grades are due to the Registrar’s Office no later than 5:00 PM the Monday immediately after the designated final exam week.

Recommended Syllabi Language Regarding Discrimination

There is no official University language. The following was written by a faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics.

If you experience an incident of sex- or gender-based discrimination or interpersonal violence, we encourage you to report it. While you may talk to a faculty member or TA/RA/GA, understand that as a "Responsible Employee" of the University, these individuals MUST report any acts of violence (including verbal bullying and sexual harassment) to the University's Title IX Coordinator in the IEEO Office. If you Resources for Course Development and Implementation 5 would like to speak with someone who may be able to afford you confidentiality, you can visit the Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Center’s website (offices located in Gatton Student Center, Room C316 ; email them at vipcenter@uky.edu; or call (859) 257-3574), the Counseling Center’s (CC) website (104 Mandrell Hall; (859) 257-8701), and the University Health Services (UHS) website; the VIP Center, CC, and UHS are confidential resources on campus. The VIP Center accepts walk-in appointments.
